Why am I required to fill out the M1RCR form? I did not pay MN tax on WI wages?

I am a MN resident and am a student in WI with a job near/on campus.

Yes, you will have to prepare a tax return for both Wisconsin and Minnesota.

  • The Wisconsin tax return is because you worked in the state.
  • The Minnesota tax return is because that is where you are a resident.
  • All states that have income tax's, require residents to fill out a tax return with all of there income.  Even if it is earned in another state.
  • However, your home state (Minnesota) will give a credit for the taxes you may have owed in Wisconsin.
