Why am I required to add TurboTax Deluxe for a Form 8959 when I do not meet the threshold for this form to be added/required?

If TurboTax is saying that you need to prepare Form 8959, Additional Medicare Tax, then it may be that something was entered in TurboTax that indicated a need for that form.

• You should file Form 8959 if your Medicare or RRTA wages exceed $200,000 for single filers or $250,000 for joint filers.
• You should file Form 8959 if your self-employment earnings plus wages or RRTA income exceed the threshold amount for a particular filing status as shown on Form 8959.

Double-check your entries for W-2 wages, particularly the entry for Box 5, Medicare wages.

Our joint wages are less than 250k, both Medicare & RRTA boxes are far less than 200k on each of our returns, so this answer does not apply.

It was suggested after an hour long call and some digging on these community boards that I manually insert the W2's. I have done that and it is still attaching the 8959 form and giving me back the wrong Federal due amount (since it is attaching the .9%) Please fix your system so that it does not attach the incorrect forms and force people to pay the fee to 'upgrade' with incorrect tax information.

Did you delete the W-2s you imported/uploaded?   Do you have any other earned income reported other than your W-2s?   Check your Box 14 entries from your W-2s also.   Did you enter any railroad retirement income?

If you were forced to upgrade, but did not need to, follow these steps to downgrade to a different TurboTax Online product:

1. Open your return if you haven't already.
2. In the left menu, select Switch Products.
3. Select Downgrade.

Yes I deleted the W2s and manually entered them. I also attempted to delete the form itself in the tools>delete form and reenter the W2. The form never actually deleted and is there regardless how many times I attempt to delete.

No I did not do anything with the railroad. 

My taxes are literally as simple as they could possibly be. W2 + Standard Deduction without any special forms or deductions, no ira (1099), etc.

So I guess this will not be fixed and anyone that comes across this same problem should go to another software or get ripped off for the $49. Enjoy.

TurboTax is picking up total income and not Medicare wages only! for line 1 on form 8959.  turbo tax we need a fix!!!!

Check your W2 for Medicare wages which is different than box 1 wages.

I am having the same issue and our taxable income is well below the threshold. I am extremely annoyed because every time I delete the form, it says I need it. I even deleted and re-entered all my information to see if that would work. I tried calling Turbo Tax and they wont' even answer my question unless I pay them $30.

@user17695481064 You are seeing this because the amount of Medicare taxes withheld in box 6 is Not exactly 1.45% of the Medicare wages in box 5.  Remove any cents for the Medicare taxes and see if the upgrade message goes away.

Had this same issue! I spent an hour waiting for cx service to get transferred to a tax expert. The hold was like 2 hours so I set it for a call back, but never got one.

I have made LESS money this year than I have my previous years. Never at any point have I gotten anything about this stupid 8959 form. 
I thought maybe it was a glitch? I've done it from my phone, from a tablet, on wifi, off wifi, starting over, manually imputting my W2's, scanning my W2's. Told me to upgrade every. Time.

So I ended up filing with a different company this year - despite desperately wanting to use TurboTax. I attempted two different companies - getting to the end of filing before payment just to see if they gave me an issue with this form. Absolutely not. I got my state and federal done for free with FreeTaxUSA. Already approved. I have a feeling this message is TurboTax's attempt to screw over the common person who doesn't know anything about taxes and doesn't know how to research - just giving into paying to get it done. I doubt I will be using TurboTax moving forward unfortunately. 
(FreeTaxUSA does state and federal for free if you meet very easy requirements)
