Why am I filling out an 8615 form when all of the unearned income I have is from scholarships?

You likely need to fill out Form 8615 because part of your scholarship income is considered unearned income.

 

If your scholarships exceed the amount of your tuition and required fees (room and board do not count), the IRS treats the excess amounts as unearned income, similar to passive income
