You likely need to fill out Form 8615 because part of your scholarship income is considered unearned income.
If your scholarships exceed the amount of your tuition and required fees (room and board do not count), the IRS treats the excess amounts as unearned income, similar to passive income
For more details, you can refer to the IRS Instructions for Form 8615 and scroll down to Unearned Income.
Same problem here. Dependent student 20 yrs old. The program asked early if there was a living parent but never asked anything more. I put in 1098-T and during Smart Check it sent me to the 8615 form. I only have 2,367 in excess scholarships. So I deleted the 1098-T info and entered the same amount under "other" scholarships. Smart Check sent me right back to the 8615 form without any instructions or help link. It will not let me finish my taxes.
Search for kiddie tax and use the jump to link. @1hq7
