If you’re filing a tax return for a decedent, their driver’s license or state-issued ID is generally not required. If e-filing isn’t possible due to missing ID information, you can mail the return.

Some states may request your own ID for e-filing, and TurboTax will guide you if this applies.

For more details, see:
Can I e-file a tax return for someone who is deceased?

To complete a tax return in TurboTax for a deceased person see the step-by-step guide below:

TurboTax Step-by- Step

  1. Go to the About me- Personal profile screen.
  2. Under Your info select [name] and then select Edit..
  3. Continue to the Let's check for some other situations screen.
  4. Select I am preparing this return for [name], who's passed away.
  5. Provide the date passed away.
  6. Continue through the screens. TurboTax will give you the option of paper-filing the form if needed.
