If you’re filing a tax return for a decedent, their driver’s license or state-issued ID is generally not required. If e-filing isn’t possible due to missing ID information, you can mail the return.
Some states may request your own ID for e-filing, and TurboTax will guide you if this applies.

To complete a tax return in TurboTax for a deceased person see the step-by-step guide below:
TurboTax Step-by- Step
- Go to the About me- Personal profile screen.
- Under Your info select [name] and then select Edit..
- Continue to the Let's check for some other situations screen.
- Select I am preparing this return for [name], who's passed away.
- Provide the date passed away.
- Continue through the screens. TurboTax will give you the option of paper-filing the form if needed.
