Did he die in 2023? How did you enter or list the husband as part of the household? He should be listed as Spouse. Do not pick Widow for her. Enter her as MARRIED. Then add him as the spouse. Then you can pick he was deceased and date. In the year of death she can still file a Married Joint return with him. You do a normal married joint return the year he died.
Personal Information section. If you are filing jointly, it would be a good idea to make yourself the taxpayer and your husband the spouse so that next year your name will come up first on the tax return. If he died in 2023 and you did not remarry you can file jointly with him.
When you open your tax return select to review or edit your personal information
Next to your spouse Edit your spouse's information and scroll to the question 'I'm preparing this return for XXX, who has passed away'.
Enter Yes and then put the date your husband died.
See the image below for assistance and TurboTax will file the return appropriately. Only you will be required to sign the return,
I send my sympathies to you.

Thank you.
I don't see exactly what you are recommending. Actually, I am their son doing this for my mom. I have the profile in her name. I see the check box in her profile for I am preparing this return for Kathleen, who has passed away. I left that unchecked. The next screen I have her as Widowed as of 12/31/2023. Then I have my dad as part of her household. I have the below checked for him. BUT there is no check box like you mentioned.
