Where do we enter State tax refund from 2015

[Answer edited 2-17-17 2:00 pm PST]

If you used TurboTax last year, TurboTax will automatically carry the information over to your 2016 income tax return and you do not have to enter form 1099-G for your state income tax refund.

Your 2015 state income tax refund may be taxable if:

  • In 2015, if you itemized your deductions, and
  • your itemized deductions included your state income taxes withheld or paid, instead of sales tax.

To enter your 2015 state refund:

1.    Type 1099-g in the search bar and click search.

2.    Click on Jump to 1099-g.

3.    On the Did you have any of these types of income? screen, click Yes.

4.    On the State and local tax refunds and other government payments screen, check State of local income tax refunds even if not reported on Form 1099-G.

5.    On the Did You Get a State or Local Tax Refund Last Year? screen, click Yes.

6.    On the Tell us about your refund screen, click on the down arrow and select: (See the screenshot below)

  • Where you got the refund from (state, city, municipality, etc.)
  • The amount of the refund.
  • The tax year the refund is from.

7.    On the Did Any of These Apply to You? screen, check any that apply or None of the above. Continue.

8.    At the State and Local Tax Refund Summary screen, click Done.

9.    Have your 2015 federal income tax in front of you as you continue with the remaining onscreen interview.
