Where do I enter my dependent W-2?

Do I file My dependent W-2 with mine or separate? If with mine when or where do I add them? Also what happens if one of my depended already filed his w-2 through turbo tax?

Where do I enter my dependent W-2?

Yes, it needs to be separate from yours. Do not put their income on your income tax return.

Your dependent may file a return if she/he got a W-2 for 2016 and had federal income tax withheld. If she/he files an income tax return, she/he may get a refund.

She/he must file a return if any of the following apply:

  • She/he earned more than $6,300.
  • She/he had more than $1,050 of unearned income. Unearned income is money that you get without working, like interest and dividends.
  • Her/his gross income was more than the larger of (a) $1,050 or (b) her earned income (up to $5,950) plus $350.
  • She/he had net earnings of at least $400 from her business or self-employment.
  • She/he had tax taken out of your paychecks and she wants it back.

TurboTax Online    has a Free version she/he may be able to use.

If she/he chooses to complete an income tax return, it is important that she/he choose the following options:

  • Someone else can claim me as a dependent on their tax return and
  •  And this person will claim me on their 2016 tax return. See the screenshot below.

To enter the W-2:

  • Type W-2 in the search bar and click search.
  • Click on Jump to W-2.
  • Enter the W-2 information.
