When I try to use e-file after printing my return it wants to charge me for audit defense again even though I have already paid.

Are you in California?  And trying to Efile the state return?  There is a 24.99 fee to efile state.  And if you want to have it deducted from your refund you have to sign up for Premium Service for another 44.99 charge.  So pay with a credit card or you can print and mail state for free.

Go though the FILE tab again and read all the screen slowly and closely.  Watch what buttons you click on
