When asked about the Recovery Rebate Credit, you're referencing the first stimulus payment that was given out at the top of the year. What about the 2nd payment?

How do we get the recovery rebate credit for the 2nd stimulus? The answers here do not line up. Please advise.

You will claim the Recovery Rebate Credit in TurboTax by answering the two questions about the stimulus payments that will appear at the end of the TurboTax interview.

The questions are in the section Federal Review.

Once the information is entered you will see your refund increase or balance due decrease, and TurboTax will enter the amount of the credit on Line 30 of Form 1040 for you.

TurboTax has been recently updated to reflect both payments.  If you are not seeing the option to provide both amounts in Federal Review please update your software, if using Desktop software.

  • In TurboTax for Windows, select Check for Updates from the Online menu.
  • In TurboTax for Mac, select Check for Updates from the TurboTax menu.

If you are an online TurboTax user, your software should update automatically.  However, it may be necessary to log out of TurboTax, clear your browser cache & cookies, and log back in to ensure you are seeing the most up-to-date version of the program.

The IRS is distributing payments through January 15, 2021.  Please wait until after this date to submit your tax return so that you will be filing the most accurate return possible.

Thank you. My situation is that I filed a paper return last year and it sat in an IRS trailer till December , so we did not receive a stimulus based on the IRS using our pre-retirement income from the prior year as the income basis.

Based on your response I assume that at the Final review section of the TurboTax tool it will provide a spot for us to claim the amount we were due and that will be treated on the return as a Credit.

Thank you

The Stimulus Checks are really based on your 2020 return we are filing in 2021.  So any amount you already got will be reconciled on your 2020 return line 30.  If you didn't get a Stimulus Check (and qualify) or you qualify for more it will be added to your 2020 return.  But the good news is if they paid you too much they won't take it back.

When you go through the federal review tab it will ask how much you got if any.  Or to enter your stimulus payment in TurboTax, type "stimulus" (without the quotes) in the Search box, then click the link that says "Jump to stimulus."

After you have entered your tax information and are ready for the Federal Review, it will be the first question.

If you are trying to trigger it, you can go to Other Situations, answer any questions and click Done. The next automatic selection is Federal Review and it will ask about payments received.

The Recovery rebate credit is on 1040 line 30.  It either adds to your refund or reduced a tax due.
