What to do if someone claimed you wrongfully

I have been wrongfully claimed by someone & told I can't find out who it is because of privacy laws. How long should I wait after I have sent in my paper amendments/forms for someone to contact me about next steps? Also, what would those next steps be to get my money?

What to do if someone claimed you wrongfully

The IRS will not tell you who claimed you.   All you can do now is file by mail.   Print, sign and mail your return to the IRS.   It will take a lot longer for the IRS to process your return, but the IRS will sort out whether you can be claimed as someone else's dependent.  Eventually you will receive a letter from the IRS but that will be sometime months or more than a year from when you mail your return.  Expect it to take at least six months for them to process your mailed return, due to the backlog at the IRS.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
