What is the number in the top left corner of the federal return

If it's green, it is your projected Federal refund, and if it's gray, it is your projected amount owed.  But don't pay too much attention to those numbers until you are about finished entering everything in.  Those numbers can change a lot before you are finally ready to file.

As DanielV01 responded, don't pay too much attention to those numbers at the top in green or gray. 

 

They often sometimes do not update as you go through each screen.  

 

Be sure however, to completely finish each section and choose Done or Complete (which is appropriate at the end of each section.)

 

Once you run a Final Review after you have entered all your income and expense data, those numbers at the top will update.
