employer identification number.     require for many businesses, trusts and estates.  optional for one person LLC where the owner will use his Social Security Number to appear on 1099's. the owner can apply for EIN and use that instead. also required for one person LLC when it pays wages.   if needed can be applied for online at IRS website.
