my wife received a cash gift from her father.  do we need to claim this?

No. A cash gift that you receive from a family member is NOT reportable or taxable. Please refer to page 31 of pub 525 under the heading, "gifts and inheritance" for additional clarification. https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p525.pdf

Thank you!  However, Pub 525, Page 32 does not specifically mention cash gifts.  Is there more about cash?

For 2019 you can exclude up to gifts of $15000 on your income tax return.  It does not matter who the donor is.  Jerry

A cash gift is treated the same as any other gift for income tax purposes.  As long as there are "No strings attached" you do not have to include it as income.
