What exactly is an agi?

AGI stands for Adjusted Gross Income.  The IRS defines AGI as "gross income minus adjustments to income." Depending on the adjustments you’re allowed, your AGI will be equal to or less than the total amount of income or earnings you made for the tax year.

In addition to being a key figure on your Tax Return, your AGI is now also used to confirm your identity with the IRS when you e-file.

Your AGI can be found on your 2017 Tax Return:

If you filed a:

  • 2017 Form 1040: your AGI can be found on line 37
  • 2017 Form 1040A: your AGI can be found on line 21
  • 2017 Form 1040 EZ: your AGI can be found on line 4
