Your tax return is the form you send to the government that shows your income and calculates your tax. The money the government sends back to you is your refund. Do you mean that you want to get a refund?
Who is "the first" that got a check from you? Do you mean the IRS? Why did you send a check? If you had a payment due, then you are not getting a refund. It's one or the other. Either you have to make a payment or you get a refund. You can't have both.
Look at the Form 1040 that you filed. There will be an amount on line 35a or line 37, but not both lines. Line 35a is your refund. Line 37 is the amount you had to pay.
