We paid state and federal taxes for 2014 in 2016. How can I account for this in my filing?
You can deduct the state income taxes that you paid in 2016 (for the tax year 2014) as an itemized deduction on your 2016 return. Enter it under Deductions and Credits: Estimates and Other Taxes Paid: Other Income Taxes.
Enter this state tax under Payments for 2014 or a prior year state or local income taxes paid in 2016. See the screenshot below.
The federal taxes that you paid for 2014 in 2016 aren't deductible on your federal tax return.
