We asked our account to file federal and state extension forms

For the IRS and state tax departments for 4868 in Connecticut state extension forms are required to place an extension as well as the payment estimate. per the CPA. These forms are not needed and he said he filed the forms in our behalf however, he never provided us with estimated tax amounts means that we’re going to receive penalties. He said we’re supposed to pay, but didn’t give us an amount any suggestions

Payment was due on April 15, 2024.  You will now incur penalties and late fees.  You need to find out how much you owe and make payments.  You then be notified of the penalties and late charges due.

thanks I understand we owe the penalties and amounts. I guess I didn’t state my question correctly. Can the accountant file an extension on our behalf without any for rent forms? We have nothing to prove that he actually filed an extension

My suggestion to you is to find a new accountant.

Are you talking about your 2023 tax return or your 2024 tax return? For 2024 it's too early to have filed an extension.

If you are talking about 2023, at this point it doesn't matter whether the accountant filed an extension or not, because any extension that was filed for 2023 would have expired on October 15, 2024. If you still have not filed your 2023 tax return, just go ahead and file it normally now. You do not have to enter anything about an extension. The accountant would not have laid out money for you, so if you did not make a payment with an extension yourself, you have no extension payment to enter.

What are "for rent forms"?

And.....if you need to prepare a 2023 tax return:

You cannot change the tax year.   The current online program is for 2024 only.   Only a 2024 return can be prepared online and only a 2024 return can be e-filed.

Online preparation and e-filing for 2021, 2022, and  2023 is permanently closed.

Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.

To file a return for a prior tax year

If you need to prepare a return for 2021, 2022, or 2023  you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s)

You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.

Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
