W4P filing Questions Survivor Status

Please read below let me know if your familiar with W4P form I’m currently filing out paperwork for deceased husbands survivor benefits with DFAS(Defense Finance Accounting Service) it pays out monthly annuity for Air Force that I’m to receive as surviving window.

Husband passed in November of 2024. Currently take care of my daughters two children and put them under dependents on taxes as I pay completely for the financial cost both under the age of 17 but they are not legally adopted by me.

Having an issue and questions filing out W4P form.

STEP 1 Form W4-P:

1.What do I file as? Single/ Married filing jointly/ Head of household or Qualify Window Status.

a. I was told I could file as Qualifying Window Status but it seems as you must have a

dependent who is a child of the Veteran directly and or adopted on paper dependent.

2. After this how do I file moving forward on my taxes that I am to file? Head of Household ....Single...or how long if I can file a Married or Window Status

Step 2 Form W-4P:

3. They want income from a Job(There isn’t one) but additionally there are 2 other pensions and annuities coming in but I have yet to receive meaning I don’t know their amounts but they are most likely less then the DFAS funds.

a. Do I just mark 0 for now since I haven’t started to receive them as of yet.

b. When I do start to receive them can I resend this W-4P form again and have it adjusted.

Step 3 Form W-4P:

The income here will be less than $200,000. I currently claim my daughters 2 children as dependents both under the age of 17. How do I mark Step 3? If I have them as dependents on taxes normally do I count them here?

W4P filing Questions Survivor Status

1. You would be able to use the Head of Household status.  You are correct that because it is your grandchild vs. child, the qualifying widow cannot be used.

2. You can continue to use the Head of Household as long as you are supporting your dependents and they are the qualifying child.

3. You can mark zero for now if you are not able to determine how much you will be receiving from the other income, but please be sure to update it as soon as you can determine the amount. You do not want to end up owing at the end of the year.

For Step 3, you can use $4,000 for the children and $500 for other dependents.
