W2 box 1 an 2 empty

My son is a college student.  His employer, summer job, generated a W2 for him that has nothing in Box 1 (income)or 2 (fed tax withheld).  He made between about $5000 over the summer.  Does he need to file?

If he was an employee and that was his only income with nothing withheld he doesn’t have a filing requirement. Be sure that nothing was withheld by asking his employer.

• What else is on your son's W-2?
• Is box 1 & 2 blank?
• Is there anything in boxes 3, 5, 12 or 14?
• It isn't relevant to this W-2, but did he work anywhere else?
