TurboTax wants the Issued Date on the Driver's License, but there isn't one.

So, I am trying to help out a friend.  We are trying to upload his taxes the software wants his Missouri Driver's license.  His liecense doesn't have an Issued Date (ISS).  But Turbo Tax won't let us file until we enter one.  Ugh, Epic Failure... please help.

Here is the true answer and not the one that tech support failed to supply... Only took 90 minutes on the phone with tech support to figure out.

If you are using the software and you find out that your ID does not have an ISS (Date Issued), you will not be able to use this feature, instead remove the data from the ID number field and the expiration date field. Even though you have the Drivers License checked, it will allow you to continue as long as all the fields are empty.

The TurboTax Support Agent says below that we don't have to enter a drivers license.... but what she fails to mention is, once you put one in, you can't unselect it.  So now we are stuck, we can't file it because we can't remove the driver's license and we can't proceed without a non existing ISS entry.

I had a hard time seeing the one for WV.  It is in RED, and is at the top of the picture, partially obscured by the oval with an outline of the state in it.

Your driver's license number is actually not required to file your federal taxes, nor is it required to file your State tax return in most states. If your State issued ID is not being accepted, you can leave the driver's license/state ID information blank, and still file your federal tax return.

Two states, Illinois and Alabama, do require a driver's license to file a state return.

For additional information, you can view the IRS information on New Security Safeguards. The two following paragraphs taken from that website are specific to your situation:

Do I need a driver’s license number to file a return?

You do not need a driver’s license number to file a federal return. Some states may request your driver’s license number for state tax returns because they have the ability to match state records and help confirm your identity. This is one more layer of protection against identity thieves. State tax software will prompt you for your driver’s license number if it is requested by the state. You also can review  state revenue department websites  for information.

Why am I being asked for my driver’s license number?

In an effort to better protect you from identity thieves, some states will be trying new approaches. Some states may ask for additional identification information, such as your driver’s license number, when you are preparing your state tax return. This will be another layer of protection because identity thieves may already have your name and Social Security number, but perhaps not your driver’s license number. States requesting this information have the ability to match driver’s license information and other identifying records to help confirm your identity. You do not need a driver’s license number to file your federal tax return.

TurboTax wants the Issued Date on the Driver's License, but there isn't one.

The online version of Turbo Tax accepts the driver's license info without the issue date.  Why can't this software do the same?

TurboTax wants the Issued Date on the Driver's License, but there isn't one.

This is NOT an answer to the question. This is just generic blurb as typical by tech support who does not listen.  You answered "why" you might do it and NOT how to fix it once you try to enter the information and find out that the ISS field is required field even though the software does not have it labeled as a required field.

As I struggled on the phone with tech support for 90 minutes. NINETY MINUTES!  There is a bug in the software. And no one recognized that.

Here are the details AGAIN!  Once you enter the details, you are stuck.
1) You can't undo it and you can't uncheck.
2) you don't know until you start that the ISS is required.
3) you can restart the software as many times as you want, because that is what they made me do. but it will not reset this section.

Bottom line, not all IDs have an ISS yet your software sadly assumes that they do.
