TurboTax sent different wages number to the IRS then I have in my TurboTax report.

I got mail from NJ GROSS INCOME TAX, Found that they have a bigger number of wages then I have in my report. According to this It looks now that I own pay more money. Who will responsible for that mistake. How I can be sure that other TurboTax reports were sent to IRS with correct numbers?

The New Jersey Division of Taxation and the IRS are two completely separate agencies. The NJ Division of Taxation is part of the state government, and the IRS is part of the federal government. Your NJ state tax return is processed by the Division of Taxation. Your federal tax return is processed by the IRS.

If you got a letter from the New Jersey Division of Taxation (NJ Gross Income Tax), that letter is about your state tax return. It has nothing to do with any information that was sent to the IRS. The wages on your New Jersey tax return (Form NJ-1040 line 15) should come from the state wages in box 16 of your W-2. This is normally higher than your federal wages on federal Form 1040 line 1 or line 1a (depending on the year). That's because there are some deductions from your pay that are exempt from federal tax but are taxed by the state.

Look at the wages on line 15 of your Form NJ-1040 and the state wages in box 16 of your W-2. They should be the same. If they are not, either you entered box 16 incorrectly in TurboTax, or you did not enter anything in box 16 at all.

What TurboTax sent to the New Jersey Division of Taxation on line 15 of your Form NJ-1040 is supposed to be different from what it sent to the IRS on federal Form 1040 line 1 or 1a. That is not a mistake.

If you have further questions, please tell us what year the letter from the NJ Division of Taxation is about, and exactly what it says is wrong on your New Jersey tax return. Also tell us the exact amounts in boxes 1 and 16 of your W-2 for that year, and on Form NJ-1040 line 15 and federal Form 1040 line 1 or 1a. Look at the actual W-2 form that you got from your employer, not what you entered in TurboTax.

And a few words of caution---even if you import your W-2 from the employers payroll site, or snap a photo of it using the mobile app, you should ALWAYS double check the numbers that were entered and make sure they match what is on the actual hard copy of the W-2.
