8 months ago, I thought that I might want to amend my 2022 taxes. I started an amendment, entered a change to see what the result would be, decided not to do it, and didn't finish the process. Now I have an amendment that I need to make. I went through the whole process, but my 1040X is showing the amended version of my taxes from April, the one that I never filed.
So my 1040X is simply wrong. But also my amended taxes are wrong because they are based off an amendment that I never filed. I am completely lost as to how to handle this.
Help??
[BTW I posted another similar post but it was long and harder to follow re my 2023 taxes, so I'm posting this shorter request for help hoping that it'll get a reply]
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
So I’m assuming you are doing this in the 2022 Desktop program? Open the original .tax2022 file (the one you downloaded from Online with the first amendment you started). Then delete the 1040X. In the Desktop program all you have to do is go to Forms mode and delete the 1040X. Then manually take the changes out to put the return back to the original return you actually filed. Then you can amend properly.
Online.
Should I switch to doing things desktop and not online? Is TurboTax Online an inferior product when it comes to problem solving?
Yes the Desktop program is better. Especially since you have to fix it before you do the real amendment.
I'm not sure that there's any way to fix things in my online account. I'm planning to make my own 1040-X. Also for some reason TurboTax refused to file online, possibly because it treated my prior unfinished amendment as a non-eFiled amendment. So I have to print it all out and mail it. Plus, TurboTax gave me no instructions on how to mail it, so I'll have to use the 1040-X instructions and figure it out for myself.
