TT 2025 Desktop Carryover Worksheet Bug?

In TT Desktop Home & Business 2025, the 2024 State Estimate Information that gets imported when transferring from my 2024 taxes reports the incorrect amount.

When determining the amount for box (c) of "Estimated Paid After 12/31" in the section "2024 State Estimate Information", it appears to have used the total estimated 2024 state taxes, as opposed to only the amount paid after 12/31.

It's easy to adjust the amount on the carryover worksheet once it's determined the amount is incorrect. However, most people will likely not recognize the incorrect amount is imported and this likely impacts Schedule A.

I encountered this bug as well when reviewing my anticipated 2025 Schedule A, then remembered that yesterday I had seen your post about the same thing.  This early in the season we'll just have to wait and see how long it takes to get fixed.  Of course you and I have already made the correction to our files, but it could affect others who are trying to target the $40,000 SALT limit by adjusting estimated tax payments made before the end of 2025.

And don’t forget if and when they do update the program you might need to change your entries if you had adjusted them or overrode them etc.

Good thing to check, although I suspect this issue is confined to the transfer process.

I'll check in a couple weeks to see if it's corrected and will report back.

@GabiU - Sounds good and happy to provide more info.

I did call TT a couple weeks ago and "officially" reported the bug.

@SteamTrain  - Unfortunately, I suspect that if/when this is fixed, it will require a fresh transfer to catch the correct amount. I totally agree with you that this is a problem and I suspect most people won't even realize that their state deductions are incorrect. Maybe it will be fixed when Schedule A is finalized, which won't be till the middle of January.

Thanks,

Jeff

All

So the software Update overnight (6-7 Jan) did fix the issue we had with the improper state 4th Qtr estimated tax carryover into 2025 taxes....but with qualifications.

1) Works just fine for newly created 2025 tax files.

2) For files created before the software update, they've added a new check (see pics below) that, somewhere during the prep, will ask the user to confirm the $$ amount. Of course, that assumes the user understands what the software is referring to. I don't know yet when/where the software will ask for that yet.

In the 3rd picture, if I manually changed the $$ amount in the carryover worksheet (the lower-down tan box in forms mode) to the correct $0 (in my case) the red box highlight went away, and the upper table reflects the proper $0 too.

______________

Of course, the "Online" users will have to depend on the software prompting the users for the correct amount.

Unfortunately, I see that the 1099-R section interview is still not ready.  Let the screaming for that section begin.

The Federal Carryover Worksheet has an error for the (c)  Estimated Taxes Pd After 12/31 and the (d) Total Withheld/Pmts.  In my TT return the same number is listed in both boxes.  I did not restart a new return with the latest software update.  Do I override both of these entries  in the lower section of the Worksheet? Also check the "State taxes paid after 12/31/2024 are correct" box?  Another error.  The box should be "State taxes paid after 12/31/2025 are correct"

@kungac

1)  Yes, you correct them down in the lower area

2)  No, the checkbox IS for confirming the amount you might have paid the state after 12/31/2024.

......i.e.  That $$ amount is supposed to represent a 2024 4th Qtr state estimate paid in January of 2025....for 2024 state taxes.  This $$ amount is used as part of...added to... your potential Federal deduction for state taxes paid during 2025.

An  early version of the tax software put the total 2024 state estimates in that box I'm referring to in #2 above.

During the interview, that payment comes up for a user to confirm and change for those who started their tax file before the software correction occurred.  Starting a new tax file now, brings over the correct number, but TTX software folks apparently couldn't figure a way to get it automatically corrected for those who started their files really early.   The bug was fixed in a Jan 6-7 overnight updates...so those starting tax files after that date didn't encounter the problem.

But, I don't know what happened to your #1 problem....didn't see it in Nov & Dec as part of the #2 bug

(i.e., yet another reason to never start taxes until February...but then, we can thank all those folks to do the beta testing in December and January)

I am not sure if this is same issue, when   I transfer my 2024 to 2025 I do not see any of my 2024 numbers.  Example, none of my 2024 numbers for deduction and credit have been transferred.

@meclayton

I guess it depends on what you expect to see & where you are looking.

The only $$ that should transfer, are any $$ that might affect this year's tax filing. Thus the majority of $$ form 2024 don't show in this year's file.

Now, in the Desktop Menu pages, those do show $#s form last year in a 2024 column, but ~95% aren't used in the 2025 filing.  If you don't see the 2024 numbers on the Menu selection pages, make sure you started your 2025 file by transferring in a .tax2024 datafile  (a 2024 PDF transfer won't do much of anything).

Thanks for the info, can you tell me how I find a .tax2024datafile?  I think it was a PDF that I transferred.  Thanks
