@rawalls18 wrote:Trying to submit a return. Turbotax message says the submission is a duplicate. Then says they could not find a federal return that matches. Both submitted at SAME TIME.So they are saying that the STATE submission is a duplicate but the federal was not submitted. How can that be?
When you log in currently and go to the Tax Home (it may open there), what is shown for the status? Which of these terms is used for the Federal return: does it say pending, accepted, rejected, started, printed, ready to mail, or what?
And what does it show for the state return status?
Both statuses are that nothing has been submitted yet. We tried to submit again and got the same issue. I tried to submit the federal alone and gut the “the submission is a duplicate of one that was previously received.” But nothing was actually submitted when you check the status. I called TurboTax customer service and even they can’t help me. Now I have to try to contact the online store I bought the software from. TurboTax customer service said maybe they could send me a new key since it seems it’s the software. Then why did my return have no issues transmitting AFTER hers failed? TT said they will send me a link to request a refund for the state filing fee we paid. She needs this money to buy a computer for vet school that starts in 3 weeks. TurboTax also said I should file it by mail. Nah. My federal 2023 return went missing in the mail TWICE since May even though the post office signed that it went into the IRS PO Box both times. So it got lost somewhere between the post office and the IRS building? Twice? Ok. Sounds sus to me lol Non one at the IRS can help me since it was “never received”. I don’t want hers going to the same place mine went twice.
Are you married? How are you filing? Aren't you filing a Married filing Joint return? Her return might be rejecting if you already included her ssn on your return. Or is she your dependent? I think we need more details. Whose returns are rejecting and what exactly is the reject message or code? A duplicate return usually means a ssn number has already been filed on someone else's return. If she is your dependent then she has to check the box that says she can be claimed on someone else's return. Go back though My Info or Personal Info and look for that question.
It’s not anything you mentioned. My filing status has nothing to do with her tax return not going through. She no longer qualifies as our dependent because she worked while in school full time. Her SSN is not on anyone else’s tax return.
She had a simple tax return. She worked. She had college expenses. That’s it.
The message box that popped up while I was trying to submit hers return was this “ The submission is a duplicate of one that was previously received”. That can’t be true because I had not submitted ANY returns for ANYBODY before hers.
Then it went on to say “ A federal return that matches this state return could not be found. The IRS requires that all linked state returns be filed after or in conjunction with the federal return. Please verify that your federal return has been e-filed and has not been rejected by the IRS”.
That implies I was JUST submitting the state return. Not true. I was submitting BOTH. I even went back and tried about a half dozen times over the last 3 days and I get the same message. I have been e-filing with TurboTax since 1998. Before that I used the software and mailed it in. Before that I used paper and pen and a calculator. Lol I’m no newbie to doing taxes or using TurboTax.
I even went back and tried to submit kits the federal to see what would happen. I hit the “This submission is a duplicate of one that was previously received.”
So how can they have no record of her federal return being submitted AND YET it’s a duplicate of one they previously received? Thats’s impossible.
The filing status shows nothing has been submitted. I called TurboTax and she said nothing was submitted. She said it was a software issue.
I stopped trying to submit hers, finished up MY taxes and it went through without a hit hitch so how could it be a software glitch if it worked for my taxes?
i think it was a transmission glitch. Technology does glitch.
TurboTax said to contact the seller. I doubt they will do anything. They told me to mail hers in. Nope. My 2023 tax return was mailed in TWICE and is missing in action, TWICE. And both times it was signed for by the recipient. No one will help me. I am reluctant to mail them anything anymore. My returns probably got dumped in the woods between the post office and the IRS building. 🤣
Turbotax said they would send me a form to fill out to get reimbursed for the state filing fee she paid.
I am going to go online and have her make an Intuit ID and use their free software and see if that works. If not I guess I will be forced to mail it in. Ugh.
Maybe this is like THE FLASH tv show, and a portal opened when lightning struck and her return was submitted in an alternate universe and that’s why it’s showing as a duplicate but also shows it’s not filed here. The IRS connected in every universe because the IRS is gonna get their money no matter WHERE you are. You can’t hide from them. Yep. That it for sure. Makes total sense. 🤣🤣🤣
