Box 1 = Taxable pay on W-2.  Box 3 - SS Wages - is often more, due to reductions to taxable (eg, 401k), some of which are accounted for in Box 12. Gross pay may Not be fully reflected on W-2, may have to check End-Of-Year pay statement.
