TurboTax is free if you use the Free online edition and do not upgrade to any of the other editions such as Plus, Deluxe, Premier or Self-Employed. The Free edition is only for fairly simple tax returns and only supports IRS Forms 1040EZ and 1040A. If you have tax data that cannot be entered on a 1040EZ or 1040A the program requests that you upgrade to higher edition which is not free.
After signing in to online return, select Tools then
click the shopping cart (My Fees) to get a breakdown of your TurboTax charges.
If your TurboTax Online fees aren't quite what you expected, it's likely you upgraded to a more full-featured version like PLUS or better, added a state, and/or chose one or more optional services such as Refund Processing or Audit Defense.
