Taxes rejected due to ex husband filing jointly during dissolution

My ex husband filed his 2021 taxes as joint return without my permission. Once I tried filing my 2021 taxes as married filing separately my tax preparer advised me that they were rejected because my ex filed jointly. I reported this to the irs and got an identity pin. Then mailed in my 2021 taxes as married filing seperate. They were processed and I haven’t heard back from IRS to date. As I filed my 2024 taxes this year as single- (now  we’re officially divorced) I noticed a 1500 tax debt from 2021!! I’m clueless on what it is or why it became..but now I’m going to lose my entire refund due to this. What should I do?

Do all of these:

  • You can also log in to your IRS account to see what the records show. View Your Account Information
  • Contact Taxpayer Advocate Service before you file.  Their number is 877-777-4778.
  • You can also call the IRS Treasury Offset Program at 800-304-3107. You need somebody to investigate that debt that does not belong to you and should not be part of your account.

Good luck!
