I am trying to finish up and file but it won't let me go back and put in a payment I made in December.

I believe you are trying to enter an estimated tax payment you made. If so, you will make that in the Estimated and Other Taxes Paid section (under Deductions and Credits) and then Estimates. You will see options there for payments for various types of federal and state estimated tax payments.

I found that but it was grayed out and a blue bubble came up when I tried to enter the numbers. I think it’s because I thought it was in payment under filing and I started the file then tried to back up. So I guess I will have to file then do an amended return. I hope I will be able to enter the $4000 prepayment I made then. Any other suggestions?

Try closing TurboTax and then when you come back in do not select Pick up where you left off, click on Deductions and Credits and follow the instructions above from ThomasM125 for entering the estimated payments.
