I am an American/Canadian citizen with permanent resident status in Mexico, married to a Mexican/Canadian. We live in Mexico but I have been visiting family and taking care of nonagenarian mother in the USA since October 2019 and have no plans to return to Mexico permanently until after the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. I might want to apply for
My husband works and I do not/have not had any income for years -- not yet retired. My husband was last in the US in the year 2007. He has no US income.
When I go to file US taxes -- if only to get some financial assistance during the pandemic -- I get stymied by my filing status. What are my filing options, given my particular circumstances? Most likely it's "married filing separately" but I don't see us as fitting in to the examples that are often used when pointing that out as an option. Even if I go to a website for non-filers (which now I'm thinking maybe a dubious prospect) I get the choice of "single" or "married filing jointly".
