Tax Deadline

I submitted our taxes on April 18th.  I have been waiting the money to be deducted from my checking account.  I read where it may take up to 7-10 business days.

I decided to check turbo tax to verify that my taxes were submitted and was able to determine that both returns had to be resubmitted.  I have never filed a late return and not sure what I need to do next to avoid any penalties?

When you e-file your federal return, you should get two e-mails.

The first email comes 15-20 minutes after the program informs you that you have successfully sent your tax return. That e-mail informs you that you have successfully submitted your return.

The 2nd e-mail will come 20 minutes to 24 hours later and informs you if the IRS has rejected or accepted your e-filed return.

    Do you have that?

Also, check at www.irs.gov/refunds to confirm the status of your federal return.

There is nothing you can do at this point to avoid penalties. You have filed late and paid your tax late. The IRS will send you a bill for any penalties that you owe. If the amount of the penalties is very small they might not bother to bill you for it.

Sadly you missed the 5 day "perfection" period to fix and resubmit the return to be timely filed ... you only had until 4/23 this year.    In the future please watch your email carefully after you file so you can confirm the return was successfully efiled and make any corrections needed on a timely basis.

just an FYI. depending on your e-mail spam filters, the acceptance or rejection e-mail can end up in the spam or trash folder.
