Stock sale across the end of the year

I sold some stock on the last day of December 2023. Transaction date is in December. Settlement date is in the beginning of January 2024. Do I realize capital gain/loss in 2023 or 2024?

others have a different view of trade date vs settlement date but use the 1099 if you get one for the sales (they should be using trade date as described in the links.

In all cases go with what the forms reporting the transaction to the IRS say.  But if this trade does not have a 1099-B associated with it then the settlement date is when the trade is complete and reported.
