stimulus

Started a new job in August, and my parents could no longer use me as a dependent last year on their Taxes. They did receive all their stimulus money using me as a dependent before my job started.

Now, when I get to the part of turbo tax asking me if I received my third stimulus check do I answer yes or no?

I did answer no and it added $1400.00 to my refund. I did not save my return as I am not sure it will create a problem for me or my parents down the line.

You can enter it, get the 1400 and no problems for you or your parents.

Answer no. Your parents received a stimulus payment for you. You did not get it.

The IRS allows you to claim a $1,400 rebate recovery credit on your tax return even if you were a dependent last year.

The IRS says: "No longer a dependent: Individuals who were claimed or could be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s tax return for 2019 or 2020 may now be eligible if they can’t be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s tax return for 2021."

See: Q C2. Not Eligible for Third Economic Impact Payments: If I wasn’t eligible for a third Economic Impact Payment, am I not eligible to claim the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit?  (added January 13, 2022).
