Stimulus Rebate For 2020

I was claimed as an adult child dependent for 2019 therefore didn't receive any stimulus. I know the rebate tax credit is a thing but since I'm filing independent for 2020 can I use that?

Yes, if no one can claim you as a dependent for 2020, and you meet the other requirements for the stimulus payment, you will be able to claim it as a credit on your 2020 tax return. It's called the Recovery Rebate Credit, and it will appear on Form 1040 line 30.

Note that the requirement is that no one can claim you as a dependent. It doesn't matter whether they actually do claim you.

If you are not a dependent in tax year 2020, you can claim both stimulus payments on your 2020 tax return.

If you are using TurboTax Online:

    1. Sign into your account and open your tax return
    2. Click on Federal in the left section of the screen then on Federal review on the top right of the screen
    3. The next screen is titled Let's make sure you got the right stimulus amount. Click Continue
    4. Follow the interview
    5. TurboTax will calculate the amount of stimulus payable to you and include it in your tax return.
