Why did I owe state taxes this year and have never owed any taxes ever before
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
Owing state taxes at the end of the year is the result of not having enough state taxes withheld from your W2 pay during the tax year. Typically, that shows up as your pay increases but withholding has not been updated. You will need to contact your employer to complete/file a new withholding form for your state to withhold at a higher rate.
I made less then the years before.
If you owe state taxes this year and have not in prior years, it could also be from fewer deductions or state tax credits. Although we cannot see your return, it may be helpful to do a line by line comparison of your state return with prior years to see the key differences.
