I thought it said that 1 state return was free.   Why did you charge me $20 for the state return?

The CD/download gives you the software to prepare returns for one specific state,   When you use desktop software, there is an additional fee to e-file a state return.  You can avoid that fee if you print, sign and mail the state return.  The state e-file fee is $19.99 and increases in March.

If you purchased the Deluxe desktop CD/Download edition or higher the purchase price included one free state program download.  It does Not include one free state tax return e-filing.

The current e-file charge for state tax return using the desktop editions is $20.  There will be a price increase on March 1 to $25.  The e-file charge can be avoided by printing and mailing the state tax return.

My understanding is that the software to prepare the state return is free.  Also, you get a free efile for the Federal return but must pay $20 to efile the state return.
