State filing requirements

I have a unique job working in television production. I travel the country to different cities all over, on aver 12-15 times a year, spending about a week in each city I go to.

I am an independent contractor for the production company that does the show and they provide me with a 1099-NEC form at the end of the year for the work that I do.

That said, my wife and I are switching who does our tax prep this year, going into 2025, and the person we spoke with told us that I should be filing in each state that I work in.

The work I do is for the company that produces the show. It is not for any business in the state that I work in.

In the 16 years I have been doing this line of work, no one has ever told me that, so I am wondering if there was a rule change I need to know about, or if I should find another tax prep person.

It doesn't matter where the company that pays you is located. What matters is where you do the work.

There was no rule change. You do need to find another tax prep person, other than the one who never told you that you have to file in each state that you work in. But you are already looking for someone new. The person that you spoke to is on the right track, but it would be best to find someone who specializes in multi-state taxation. Ask around among people you work with. Performers and other people in the entertainment and sports industries deal with this all the time.
