What is the difference between the SSA-1099 and the SSA-1099SM?  We've always just had the SSA-1099.

SSA-1099 and SSA-1099SM are the same.   Look at the bottom left of your SSA-1099 form.  It says SSA-1099SM there.  Here’s a sample of the 2019 SSA-1099 form.

The SM must mean Self Mailer.   I found a Social Security article and it lists the SSA-1099 versions down in Section E

The "SM" stands for Self Mailer.  As @VolvoGirl said, the statements are the same.

Just an FYI: The SSA-1099-SM is for Self Mailer - this means that there is a special paper that is folded & sealed and mailed without an envelope. There are preforations so receipient can open easily. This is a cost-efficiant way to send out these documents.
