Someone else can claim XYZ on their tax return (Check box)

I'm 20 years old and full time student.  I provide more than half of my support from my income ($1500 from W2 and 20000 from 1099G).  My question is:

Do I require to check this box if my parent will not claim me? If I require to check this box, Can I claim that I provide over half of my support with the 1099G money because I was unemployed due the COVID 19?

I make so much different in tax.  Thank you.

Yes. It does not have to be earned income that you support yourself with. Your unemployment counts towards your support.

Thank you for your reply.  It's two part question.

1.  Do I require to check the box "Someone else cam claim me on their tax return" if my parent will not claim me? This check box make lot of different in Standard Deduction.

2. Can I answer Yes to "Do I provide over half of my support (in TurboTax)"? I pay for over half of my support with unemployment 1099G. Does it only count from my earn income or any income?

Thank you for clarify my question.

1. You would only check the box that they can claim you if they provide more than half of your support. Therefore, if the answer to your 2nd question is that you provide more than 50% of your support, then you are not required to select the box that your parents can claim you.

TurboTax Who can I claim as my dependent? summarizes the rules, which include the following:

Qualifying child

  • They're related to you.
  • They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • They're a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
  • They're under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students).
    • No age limit for permanently and totally disabled children.
  • They lived with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply).
  • They didn't provide more than half of their own support for the year.

Qualifying relative

  • They don't have to be related to you (despite the name).
  • They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • They're a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
  • They lived with you the entire year.
  • They made less than $4,300 in 2020.
  • You provided more than half of their financial support.

2. If you are a full time student under age 24, however, you may find that you are getting questions about "Kiddie Tax." Unemployment income is considered unearned income. In such a case, the child's income is taxed at the parent's rates.
