I had my solar panel installed in 2022 but it was operational only from April 2023. Having said that should I include solar installation expense in my Tax filing for this year (Financial 2022) or next year ?

@thiyaga11 Thanks for the Question!! You also cannot claim the credit if you bought, but didn’t install the solar system. It must be placed in service during the year, meaning they must be installed and producing electricity. All the expenses associated with it should be claimed in 2023 as well. To claim the Solar Energy Federal Tax credit, you need to complete and attach the IRS Form 5695 to your federal tax return.

@SwapnaM , Thanks for the details. If I understand correctly. when the Device is Operational in 2023, I can claim the Tax deduction for Solar for 2023 tax year In 2024 tax filing. Let me know otherwise.
@thiyaga11 Yes as the solar panels are operational in 2023, you'll get the credit on your 2023 tax return that you'll file before the due date in April 2024. TurboTax Online for 2023- will be ready in Jan 2024.
