My daughter is 18 but a Senior still in high school. Would I still get a child credit for her? How do I now file my taxes? Will I do them different this year?

You will be eligible to receive the $500 credit for other dependents. File your return the same as in the past TurboTax will do the calculation for you automatically.

Has to be under 18 to get the Child Tax Credit. So you would get the Other Dependent credit for her. You can still claim her if she is under 19 or a full time student under 24.

So, how do I show this on my return? In the past, it would have me put her social in and it took care of it. Is there a different box I will check now?

Hello jmj03jmj,

Happy to assist you with your question! If your daughter is now 18 years old, she might still qualify to be claimed as a dependent (please see the requirements here: Who can I claim as my dependent? ); however she does not qualify for the child tax credit.

Instead she would qualify as other dependent and you will get the maximum credit of $500.

Since your daughter is 18, she no longer qualifies for the Child Tax Credit, but she will qualify for the Credit for Other Dependents, which is $500. As long as your daughter meets the other requirements to be your dependent, you can continue to claim her as your dependent on your 2022 tax return.
