Hi, I received the EV credit in full but I did not have any tax liability. Can I just return it with a check or do I need an amended tax return?

Please give us a little more information.  Did you receive the EV credit by filing your tax return or was it an incentive given to you when you purchased your EV?

If there is no tax liability on your tax return, TurboTax would not include the credit at all so there would be no need to return it.

I received it after I filled my taxes, not at vehicle purchase. I believe I should have not claim it in the first place?

Wait to see what the IRS does; they may adjust your tax return if you were not supposed to take the credit.   If you do need to amend to remove a tax credit, please see below.  If you want to make changes or add a document to a tax return that has already been submitted, you should follow these guidelines.

  • You must first wait until the initial return is completely processed.
  • You will have to use the same TurboTax account that you used for the original tax return.
  • Once you begin your amendment, you'll see your original return.
  • The refund calculator will start new at $0 and only reflect the changes in the refund or tax due
  • Only make changes to the areas of your return that need amending.
  • You have three years from the date you filed your return or two years after you paid the tax due (whichever is later) to file an amendment

Select your product below and follow the instructions.
