Resident Alien or nonresident

I have been in the U.S since August 2014 on a F1 visa. Graduated in May 2019, did OPT for that summer and then got into graduate school August 2019 and still on F1 visa till I graduate in 2021. I have been using Sprintax for my taxes return but now I’m being directed to TurboTax to file my taxes. I’m wondering if I’m considered a resident alien and if it’s okay for me to use TurboTax from now on!! Thanks!!

  • Also, I have a 1098T that I am not sure if I need to file it or not. I have not been filing it before, but since I might meet resident alien requirement I’m not sure if I need to file it or not!!

Yes, you are a resident for 2019.  Your 5 years or part years on an F1 visa are 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018.

You can use TurboTax. If you paid your own tuition you can enter the 1098T in TurboTax.
