That rejection involves 3 parts. Please check your child's date of birth, social security number and the last name on the card versus the program. Sometimes last names used by Social Security don't match up with the IRS due to some taxpayers having multiple names on the card which was designed for 3 names originally. If the birth date, social and name are all correct, there may something wrong at the Social Security Administration. Visiting your local social security office is quick and easy. You can also go online. Please see SSA FAQ for SSN cards here.

If you have double checked and made sure that the SSN is correct, you have a rejection that cannot be fixed.   You will need to print, sign and mail your tax return.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
