Reject 2020 Federal Tax Return

I keep getting a rejected 2020 Federal Tax and State Return after correcting the AGI. I owe both Federal and State taxes and my credit card was charged for the Federal taxes due. Do I still need to send in a check for the Federal return if my credit card was already charged but the return was rejected? Should I send in a check for the State return although my bank debit information was submitted for the taxes due?

Reject 2020 Federal Tax Return

If you used the IRS website to pay for your federal income taxes, no, don't send a check to pay your income taxes again.

Yes, send a payment to the state. Your return was e-filed but it was not accepted so it was not "submitted" to the state. As long as your return was rejected, the state does not have your tax return or the information on your tax return.

Before e-filing or mailing in your tax return, remove the Direct Debit information to avoid the IRS withdrawing the funds.

If you aren't able to e-file your tax returns, see How do I switch from "E-File" to "File by Mail" in TurboTax Online?

Federal tax return e-file accepted.  State tax return did not transfer.  But I was charged by the state.

Your state return must have been e-filed.  Did you receive an e-mail from the State stating that your return was accepted.

Here is how to check your e-file status.

After you e-file your return, it's considered "pending". After the IRS processes your return, it'll either be accepted or rejected.

Once you submit your return in TurboTax Online, you'll see its status on the Tax Home screen of your account. We'll also send you emails letting you know when your e-file status changes.

You can use the IRS tool Where's My Refund to check if your e-filed return has been received.

If you don't see an e-file status for your return in TurboTax Online, you may have filed your return in a different account or using a different method.

If you used TurboTax Desktop:

  1. Select File.
  2. Select Check E-file status.
