If your refund is short $2,800 then that is because you said you did not receive the 3rd stimulus payment and the IRS has records that show you were sent the 3rd stimulus payment so they removed the $2,800 Recovery Rebate Credit that was entered on Form 1040 Line 30.
Go to this IRS website for your tax account to see if the 3rd stimulus payment is entered - https://www.irs.gov/payments/your-online-account
If you are Married Filing Jointly also check your spouse's tax account.
If you checked your bank account in the March - May 2021 timeframe and there is not a $2,800 EIP3 payment from the IRS then go to this IRS website for how to start a trace on the payment - https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/questions-and-answers-about-the-third-economic-impact-payment-topic-j-p...
IRS has issued new instructions on how to proceed if your EIP3 rebate was denied.
@fanfare Can you elaborate on what the new instruction is? Is it:
https://www.irs.gov/pub/taxpros/fs-2022-22.pdf
I'm married filing jointly but neither received the third stimulus check in 2021 and IRS denied our Recovery Rebate Credit claim on the 2021 tax return. (We received the first stimulus payments, #1 Debit card & #2 Check.) IRS website provided general reasons as to why one might not qualify, but we met all of the requirements to qualify, including income less than $150,000, and we each received Forms 6475 from the IRS in 2022 saying that we were each issued $1,400 in 2021 Economic Impact Payment. I've called the phone number the IRS provided 7 times (different weekdays & hours) and each time I get a recording saying to call back later due to extremely high call volumes on this topic.
The only piece of information I've found to be a little helpful says to request a payment trace (Form 3911) but that takes 6 weeks.
@knifer94 Let us know if you have any success on this issue as I would like to know the method so I can get it too
"we each received Forms 6475 from the IRS in 2022 saying that we were each issued $1,400 in 2021"
For this reason, you are not permitted to claim a Rebate Credit on your tax return.
@fanfare But we never received these checks/funds. Does that mean that payment trace is our only option?
That is correct. Expect it will take more than six weeks just for somebody to see your trace request.
IRS is months behind on paper correspondence.
you should review your bank statements again.
