Received 2 w2's from same employer with different control numbers, same wages, different coding in box 12 and 14

Hi,

I received two different W2's from the same employer with different control numbers. One W2 has different coding in boxes 12 and 14, and the other W2 has coding in box 12 only. All the wages and tips from box 1-6 are the same. Starting from box 12, both W2's have different in coding, One W2 has a D with one amount, and the other W2 has a D22 with another amount. Also one of the W2 has both AA and AA22. I can't find those code in TurboTax when I am filing for Tax Return. Any idea? I have contacted my employer, but no responses so far.

Code D is for reporting Contributions to your 401(k)

Code AA is for contributions to a Roth account.

Did you make contributions to either of those accounts?

Which codes are in Box 12 and which in Box 14. Box 14 can usually be ignored and left blank.

Adding 22 after the code is not something that is done.

Did they miss reporting contributions in 2022?

Did they make employer matching contributions?

Thank you for the reply KrisD! I checked the Tax Return for 2022, and everything looks normal there.

And Yes I made contributions to those accounts for 2024, and my job has employer matching contribution. How about the two different amounts that are listed under 2 different D's in those W2's? One W2 has a D with the amount of 16259.83, another W2 has a D22 with 8.12. I have reported correct amount on code D in 2022. I don't know why they are sending me with D22 for the year 2024. Do I add both amounts of D and D22 together for 2024 and report it under one control number?

Are these the changes in Box 12? What about Box 14?

You can take the amount listed in Box 1 and subtract that amount from the amount listed in Box 3 of your W-2.

Box 1 will not include the amount contributed to the 401(k) and that might give you an answer.

(Roth contributions are after tax, so that amount will be included in Box 1)

Control numbers are only used to download the W-2.

If you are typing in the W-2, leave the control number box blank.

The stuffs in box 14 are ok. I found the code for those inputs. The total amount in box 12 doesn't match if I subtracted box 3 from box 1.

is one marked a W-2c (bottom of the form)

subtracting box 3 from 1 should not necessarily = box 12

unless you know why you got 2 w-2s contact your employer.  it happens sometimes like when a person works for 2 different divisions within a company or when they work for two separate companies (subsidiaries) within a master company (the parent) .

I have been working under one employer for the past 5 years. previous years' W2's are straight forward. But this time, two W2's came in one envelope. First I thought they mailed me extra copies until I do the Tax Return and realized that the control numbers are different, and so are some coding in box 12 and 14. And none of the W2's have written as W2c anywhere. It just says Form W2 statement 2024 on both W2's.
