Can you claim non blood relatives as dependents?

Q. 5 years ago my lady friend had me help a homeless woman get clean and off the streets. Now 5 years later she still lives in my house  with no income, I support her. Can I claim her as a dependent on my taxes?

A. Yes, probably.  She appears to meet the three main rules (lived with you all year, you provided most of her support*, her income was less than $4700 [2023 amount]).  See the full rules above.
