Paying By Credit Card

This is more of a statement than a question, but don't see anywhere else to publish it.  People need to be aware of this so they don't get themselves into financial trouble. TurboTax 2022 gives the impression that a payment date can be selected when paying by credit card.  It automatically chose April 15, 2023 as the payment date when I selected the credit card option for my Federal return, but that is a Saturday and we have until the April 18th this year to pay.  I changed the payment date to April 17, 2023.  TurboTax even showed me the "review" screen for me to approve before submitting my choice.  It showed a payment date of April 17, 2023.  The only advisory given by the application when selecting the pay by credit card option was in regards to the service fee.  It did not advise that the payment would be made immediately.  I was not happy when my credit card got hit for the payment immediately after submitting my eFile, two and a half months before tax deadline.  My credit card should not have been immediately charged for my Federal return without providing me an explicit warning that an immediate charge would occur when using the pay by credit card option, especially when providing me the option to select and even verify the payment date.  Had I known that, I would have waited until April to submit the eFile of my returns.  This could have been particularly bad if it pushed my credit card over the limit since I was unaware that the charge was going to hit my credit card immediately, rather than on the payment date that I have selected.

Correction: one and a half months before the tax deadline.

Just to clarify, I'm talking about the actual tax amount due to the IRS being charged to my credit card immediately, not just the TurboTax fees.

Yes, Intuit has done a terrible job (imagine that) in regards to allowing pay by credit card. Same thing happened when I filed a return. The fact they let you choose a date for payment is misleading and they need to make this fact more readily apparent to users. I know two other people who did the same thing and were surprised when their card was charged the same day.

If you're paying TurboTax for your returns, a separate window opens for you to enter your credit card info.  If there is a Submit button at the bottom of the page, click it.

The payment window will close, and you'll be back in TurboTax to finish your Efile.

If you owe tax, and TurboTax is asking how you want to pay your Balance Due, there may not be a Submit button after you enter your credit card info.
