NY-SDI & NY-PFL vs. NJ-SDI & NJ-PFL

It is confusing NY-SDI & NY-PFL vs. NJ-SDI & NJ-PFL since my spouse works in NYC while we are NJ residents. Can an expert explain how they should be reported in the taxes?

Re: NY-SDI & NY-PFL vs. NJ-SDI & NJ-PFL

SDI is short term disability Insurance. This is not a tax.

PFL - paid family leave -Is considered insurance by NJ and NY

These entries are on your W-2. You should enter your Forms W-2 exactly how they are shown.

You should be filing a resident (NJ) and a nonresident tax return NY).  You should enter your nonresident state tax return first.

It is recommended to prepare the nonresident state first because your resident state will provide you a credit for the tax you pay to the nonresident state.  By preparing the nonresident state first, TurboTax can transfer the credit information to your resident state to return.

So this should be calculated for you.

Thanks for responding. Are these taxes deductible as other state mandatory taxes? Turbo Tax did not autofill or include them in the state taxes withheld. I believe they are deductible in either NY or NJ even if Turbo Tax chooses standard deduction with the federal return. Please clarify.
